Kuala Penyu is a town located in Interior Division of Sabah, east Malaysia on the island of Borneo. Its population was estimated to be around 14,271 in 1991, with ethnic Kadazan or Dusun Tatana forming the largest single ethnic group. Kuala Penyu is located on the Klias Peninsula, which was once originally covered with mangrove swamp forests. Much of these mangrove swamps were destroyed by greedy land developers, who only later realized that the soils were much too acidic to support oil palms. It is one of the gateways to Pulau Tiga National Park, where Survivor: Borneo was set. Kuala Penyu is also famous for its beaches, especially Tempurung beach, Sawangan beach and Sungai Labuan Waterfront. Now Sungai Labuan is the best part in Kuala Penyu. Sungai Labuan, as the name implies was taken from the name of a river flowing in the heart of Kuala Penyu. Therefore most of tourists who come to Kuala Penyu will not want to miss visiting Sungai Labuan. Looking at religion, it is widely diversified with unrecorded concensus has it that majority are embracing christianity, while some are still sticking to animism. Islam is also being embraced particularly in Kampung Menunggang and Kerukan. When you look at it Kuala Penyu is like geographically divided by religion. Whereby, a group of people with similar religion are concentrated in particular area in Kuala Penyu. For instance Kerukan and Menunggang have a high concentration of Islam followers. Whilst, back down to the town and Sungai Labuan, nearly all of the inhabitants are Christian.
