The Kabupaten Kulon Progo is located in the west of the province Yogyakarta with Wates as its capital City.
The fertile fluvial plains of the Progo River form the centre of wetrice irrigation fields (pertanian disawah) are mainly in the lowland.
It should be also mentioned that Kulon Progo has the lowest total population among the other Kabupaten belonging to the Province of Yogyakarta; in 1998 the population figure has been stated with 435.225, which corresponds to approximately 13% of the population in the whole province.
