Encyclopedia > Kulothunga Chola I

Kulothunga Chola was the offspring of two rival dynasties - the Cholas of Thanjavoor and the Chalukyas of Vengi when he came to the throne in 1070 A.D. The Chalukya Dynasty was an Indian royal dynasty that ruled parts of southern India between 550 and 750, and again between 973 and 1190. ...

The Cholas and the Chalukyas had always existed in constant warfare, spaced by periods of uneasy peace, for decades, due to differences in religion and ideologies. A sudden turning point in the relationship between the two kingdoms came when Kundavai, the only daughter of Raja Raja Chola, Kundavai, fell in love with the Chalukya King, Vimaladitya. Although Raja Raja Chola initially denounced the alliance, he finally relented and permitted the marriage. The marriage, in turn, provided some respite from the constant fighting between the two kingdoms. The union of Kundavai and Vimaladitya resulted in the birth of a son, Raja Narendra. Raja Raja's son, Rajendra Chola, contined to keep the peace with the Chalukyas, by negotiating a state marriage for his only child, Ammangadevi, with his nephew, Raja Narendran. Thus, when Kulothunga Chola succeeded his grandfather to the Chola throne, he united the two warring kingdoms, and the stability provided by the unification allowed him to focus his attention on expanding his large kingdom even further by annexing territories to the North and the West.

Kulothunga's military campaigns were successful a majority of the time, and the Empire expanded rapidly, reaching as far as the River Godavari in the East to River Krishna in the West. Unfortunately, however, Kulothunga lost possession of Sri Lanka which had been annexed by his great grand father, Raja Raja Chola I. Although Kulothunga was not as great an empire as his great grand father or his grand father, he was the last monarch who carried the glory of Cholas. After him, the Chola empire declined, until they were routed by the Hoysalas in the 13th century. The Godavari River is a major waterway in India, next to the Ganges and Indus rivers. ... In his reign (in 1110), Anandavarma Bhima of Kalinga's refusal to send his tribute to Cholas resulted in another Chola invasion of Kalinga, under the famous Chola General, Karunakara Thondaiman, a Pallava prince, which devasted Kalinga.
