As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 22,727 and the density of 77.06 persons per kmē. The total area is 294.91 kmē.


The city was founded on November 3, 1954.

Miyazaki Prefecture is located on the eastern coast of the island of Kyushu.
On January 1, 2006 the towns of Takajo, Takazaki, Yamada and Yamanokuchi from Kitamorokata District merged with the city of Miyakonojo to form the new city of Miyakonojo.
On January 1, 2006 the towns of Tano and Sadowara from Miyazaki District and the town of Takaoka from Higashimorokata District merged into the city of Miyazaki.
