General geographical position

Kostanai oblast is founded in 1936, located in the northern part of Republic of Kazakhstan. The territory - 196,0 thousand sq. km. (7,7 % of the total area of Republic of Kazakhstan). Kostanai oblast borders upon four oblasts of Republic of Kazakhstan (Aktyubinsk, Akmolinsk, Karaganda and North-Kazakhstan) and three regions of the Russian Federation (Orenburg, Chelyabinsk, Kurgan). The total length of the Oblast's borders with Russia approximates to 1242 km. Administrative center of the oblast is Kostanai founded in 1879 which is located on the Tobol River. The oblast numbers 16 rural, 13 settlements areas, 750 auls and 5 small cities: Kostanai, Rudny, Lisakovsk, Zhitikara, Arkalyk. Total GDP in oblast for 2002 year - 157,3 mlrd. tenge. Public instititutions

In Kostanai oblast, there are 8 higher educational institutions: 4 state and 4 not state, and also 6 branches of the Kazakhstan and Russian high schools. One of the basic - A. Baitursynov State University. The total number of students is 23,600. There are also 22 colleges in which it is trained over 12,200 pupils. In 2002-2003 year there were 723 schools open, with a total number of 155,500 students. The state network of culture totals 380 libraries, 201 club establishments, 8 museums and 2 theatres: I. Omarov regional Kazakh drama theatre and the regional Russian drama theatre. There are numerous athletic facilities: two sports arenas, 26 stadiums, 10 sports complexes and 567 sports halls.

Natural resources

The oblast is characterized by rather flat relief with inflows of the rivers: Ayat, Ubagan, Ui, Torgai, Saryozen, and Kara. The Northern part occupies the southeast "suburb" of the West-Siberian lowland, the Torgai plateau is situated to the south; in the west is the wavy plain Zaural plateau and in the southwest are the Saryarka River forks. Within the limits of the oblast there are about 310 rivers total. The largest rivers are the Tobol and the Torgai. Lcoated on the Tobol River are the Verhnetobolsk, Karatomar and Amangeldy water basins. In Kostanai oblast are more than five thousand lakes. The largest of them are located in the Torgai dell - the Kusmyryn, Sarymoin, Aksuat, and Sarykopa rivers. Total woodland area is 217,500 including 151,200 natural plantings. In connection with development of virgin lands, almost all areas are occupied with chernozems and chestnut treees. The Kostanai oblast is rich in minerals, especially iron ore (deposits of magnetite ores. The total stock of magnetite ore and hematite ore is 15.7 billion tons, of them easy enrich and not demanding enrichment - 5.7 billion tons. Are rich in iron ore, brown coal, asbestos, fire-resistant and brick clay, flux and cement limestone, and glass [[sand]. Climate

The Kostanai oblast climate is continental, with strongly pronounced alternation of four seasons. Average temperatures: January: -18 to -19 °С, July: 19 to 22 °С. In the winter, the temperature can be as cold as -25 to -30 °C. In summer, the temperature can reach 30 °C. Annual amount of precipitation is 300-350 mm in the northern areas and 240 to 280 mm in the south. The growing season is about 150 to 175 days in the north and 180 days in the south.
