Encyclopedia > Kwong Wah Hospital

Kwong Wah Hospital(KWH) was founded by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs)in 1911. It came under the management of the Hospital Authority (HA) since1991. The hospital operates a 24-hour Accident and Emergency service, and provides a full range of acute care services, mainly to the population of the West Kowloon and Wong Tai Sin areas. KWH is the major acute hospital in the HA's Kowloon West Hospital Cluster which also comprises TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital and Our Lady of Maryknoll Hospital.


KWH has 1,284 beds, and a staff force of more than 2,800. A large scale Major Refurbishment Project was successfully completed in July 1997. The Hospital Main Building is now equipped with modern medical equipment and much improved physical environment to deliver high quality patient-centred services for the public.


In view of the need for further development, a new 7-storyed Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Tsui Tsin Tong Outpatient Building at a cost of $160 million was built and commenced its services in January 2000. The services include General Outpatient Services, Specialist Outpatient Services, Pharmacy, Maternity Clinic, Well Women Clinic, Day Surgery Centre and Allied Health Services Rehabilitation Centre including Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Medical Social Services, Podiatry and TWGHs Out-reaching Home Care Services for Elderly. The hospital is able to provide a better ambulatory services to the community through this modern new building.


On in-patient services, KWH is one of the Neurosurgical designated referral centres in the HA. This service is enhanced with a tailor-made Integrated Neurosurgical Suite complete with CT scanner, dedicated Neurosurgical operating theatre and Neurosurgery High Dependency Unit. In Obstetrics and Gynaecology, KWH is also a tertiary referral centre in Pre-natal Diagnosis. The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Ambulatory Centre offers high quality ambulatory care, with the unique feature of integration with the TWGHs' Well Women Clinic.


KWH has pioneered Day Surgery services since 1993, and is currently still the leading hospital in the proportion of ambulatory surgery performed among public hospitals. Meanwhile, an integrated Breast Centre offers a comprehensive range of education, diagnosis, treatment, counselling and rehabilitation services to meet the physical and psychosocial needs of patients.


In caring for elderly persons, KWH has developed a Community Based Geriatric Service which integrates out-reaching specialist services and community based assessment clinics with hospital care and services in Geriatric Day Hospital. In Internal Medicine, KWH runs a Diabetic Centre, a Renal Dialysis Centre in Pamela Youde Polyclinic, and is expanding its Cardiology service following the installation of a fully equipped Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory.


In mid 1999, a modern Nuclear Medicine site was set up in Department of Radiology. With the installation of the Gamma Camera, the Nuclear Medicine service officially started in August 1999. The Nuclear Medicine suite is now providing various kinds of examination including Stress Cardiac Scan, Renal Scan, Bone Scan, Thyroid, Lung and Liver scan to patients from Kwong Wah Hospital, Our Lady of Maryknoll Hospital and Wong Tai Sing Hospital. Together with the notably Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Facility and other advanced equipment, the hospital's Diagnostic Radiology and Imaging service is providing comprehensive and enhanced services for patients.


In the new era, KWH will continue to forge ahead to provide quality health care service for the community.

After the hospital merged with Tung Wah Hospital and Tung Wah Eastern Hospital to form the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, Kwong Wah gradually became a full scale hospital in both Chinese and Western medicine.
