Kyle's family was having money diffilculties with his mother Helen sick and his father Sam having recently lost his job. Kyle hoped to provide for his family by smuggling a shipment of cocaine from Hector Salazar's business into the U.S. from Mexico. While he was at the mall, he was confronted by Tony Almeida, but Tony was shot by one of the Salazars' men before he could apprehend Kyle.
