Lan (formerly LanChile) is a airline based at Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport in Santiago, Chile, with flights to Latin America, North America, Polynesia, and Europe. It is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance. The "Lan" in used to be an acronym for Linea Aerea Nacional, or "national airline", but is now an acronym for "Latin American Network."


The airline was founded by Chilean Army Air Services Commander Arturo Merino Benitez (who had the Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport named after years later), and began operations on March 5, 1929 as Linea Aeropostal Santiago-Arica. In 1989, the Chilean government privatized the carrier, selling a majority stake in the company to Icarosan and Scandinavian Airlines System.

LAN Airlines S.A. (formerly Lan Chile S.A.) is an airline based in Santiago, Chile.
LAN Airlines and Aerolineas Argentinas are the only Latin American airlines that fly to Oceania.
LAN codeshares with American Airlines to U.S. destinations, British Airways and Iberia to European destinations, to Asian destinations with Korean Air, and some destinations in Australia and New Zealand with Qantas.
LAN Airlines Quarterly Profit Rises (204 words)
Chile's LAN Airlines said on Wednesday its first-quarter net profit rose 72 percent to USD$79.7 million, boosted by an accounting change, but earnings were flat without that one-time gain.
LAN posted an extraordinary non-cash gain of USD$40.3 million in the quarter after changing the way it accounts for airplane maintenance to bring it in line with international practice.
LAN said revenue growth was driven by an 18.1 percent rise in passenger revenue to USD$436.9 million.
