The LAV III armoured vehicle (AV) is the latest (entering service in 1999) in General Motors' light armoured vehicle (LAV) line. It was developed by Canada and is the primary mechanized infantry vehicle of the Canadian Armed Forces and New Zealand military. The United States Army uses a very similar, more lightly armed vehicle, the Stryker. The LAV III and the Stryker have also been referred to as Land Assault Vehicles. It is an 8×8 wheeled armored vehicle with a 25 mm cannon, and can reach speeds of 100 kilometres per hour. The LAV III is C130 transportable. Variants include Infantry Section Carrier (ISC), Command Post (CP), TOW Under Armour (TUA) anti-tank, Forward Observation Officer (FOO), Combat Engineer, and Multi-Mission Effects Vehicle (MMEV). The LAV III, similar to the ASLAV, is capable of air deployment from C130H, and will greatly enhance the mobility of the NZ Army.
The LAV III has the ability to only ford rivers up to 1.5m deep, whereas the ASLAV can cross inland water obstacles when current, wind and entry/exit points are suitable.
The LAV III is purpose built to routinely carry seven passengers, with kit, and the ability to occasionally carry one additional passenger, whereas the ASLAV fitted with the same upgraded 25mm cannon turret only carries four passengers with equipment.

Unlike the vehicle to which it is usually compared, the LAV III is armed with a large, turret-mounted 25mm cannon.
Invariably, the LAV III is parked beside a turretless M113 for a dramatic height contrast.
In short, the LAV III’s crew are “exposed” because they have to be to do their job – in the turret hatches, the commander and gunner have a clear view in front and the sides.
