Bachelor of Civil Law or B.C.L. is the name of the degree given in civil law jurisdictions to graduates of a faculty of law in a university. It is considered to be a bachelor's degree and it is often not necessary for the candidate to have another degree before obtaining the B.C.L. In civil law jurisdictions, it generally qualifies the holder to continue his legal education to enter the profession of civil law notary, lawyer or to receive training to become a judge. In civil law countries, universities generally omit the reference "civil" and name the degree Bachelor of Law, Licenciate in Law, or something similar. At Canada's McGill University, the bachelor's degree in Quebec civil law is called the Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.), to distinguish it from the bachelor's degree in common law offered by that same university: Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.).
