Service
6229 was built in 1938 at Crewe as the tenth member of its class and the last in the second batch of five red streamliners (the original five 6220-4 having been given a unique Caledonian blue livery), complete with go faster stripes. In 1939 6229 swapped identities with the first of the class 6220 Coronation and was sent to North America with a specially-constructed Coronation Scot train. There was therefore for a while a blue 6229 Duchess of Hamilton in the UK and a red 6220 Coronation in the USA. R.A. Riddles drove for most of the tour. The locomotive (though not its carriages) was shipped back from the States after the outbreak of the Second World War, and the identities of the locomotives were swapped back. 1938 (MCMXXXVIII) was a common year starting on Saturday (link will take you to calendar). ... The PrincessCoronationClass is a class of express passenger steam locomotives built by the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) and designed by William Stanier.
They were an enlarged version of the LMSPrincess Royal Class.
Duchess of Hamilton, now out of working order, is in the process of a Steam Railway appeal to have her restreamlined.
Although the "Princess Royal" class was a vast leap forward in LMS motive power, improved services by the LNER to Scotland and the fashion for streamlined locomotive design in the mid-1930's meant that the LMS needed something to top the "Princess Royal" class.
The casings also made maintenance more difficult, and it is not surprising, that with the demise of the "Coronation Scot", the casings were eventually removed post-war, and by the early fifties, all "PrincessCoronations" were unstreamlined.
6229, 6233 and 6235 are preserved; 6229 is undergoing refit, 6233 is mainlined certified as of 2001, and 6235 is a static exhibit owned by the City of Birmingham who have stated that in order to maintain the authenticity of the engine, it will not be returned to operational status.
