[1]The Real La MaMa Experimental Theater Club founded by Ellen Stewart
LaMaMa Experimental Theatre Club is a world-renowned cultural organization led by its founder, Ellen Stewart.
LaMaMa began as a tiny basement theater dedicated to the playwright and all aspects of the theater.
LaMaMas buildings contain three theatres (The First Floor Theatre, The Club, and The Annex), a gallery space, the celebrated and extensive LaMaMa Archive which documents the history of Off-Off-Broadway theater, six floors of rehearsal studios and company offices, dormitories for visiting artists, set and costume storage and LaMaMas own administrative offices.
The theatre was the brainchild of Tim's then wife Betty Burstall and was modelled on the "off-off-Broadway" theatre of the same name in New York City.
The theatre gained considerable notoreity in 1969 when Alex Buzo's controversial play Norm and Ahmed premiered there, leading to the arrest and charging of several of the actors by the Victorian ViceSquad for the use of 'obscene' language.
