The La Palma Giant Lizard (Gallotia auaritae) was a giant lizard that, as its name indicates, lived in the littoral zone of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain; its habitat ranged from sea level up to altitudes of 800 m. Its decline started 2000 years ago with the arrival of humans on La Palma. It appears to have become extinct in the last 500 years. The main causes of extinction appear to have been introduced cats, consumption by people, and agriculture. Although the species is believed to be extinct, there is a remote chance that it could be rediscovered in a remote or inaccessible location. This was also the case with other giant lizards of the Canary Islands, like with the La Gomera Giant Lizard (Gallotia bravoana). In biology and ecology, extinction is the ceasing of existence of a species or group of taxa. ... However currently it is treated as a full species, Gallotia auaritae. In zoology, as in other branches of biology, subspecies is the rank immediately subordinate to a species. ...
