There are 45,621 housing units at an average density of 29 persons/km2 (76 persons/mi2). The median income for a household in the county is $41,430, and the median income for a family is $49,872. Males have a median income of $36,686 versus $23,955 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,913. 8.70% of the population and 6.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.50% are under the age of 18 and 9.00% are 65 or older.

History of LaPorte County, Indiana (3841 words)
LAPORTE is the capital of LaPorte County, situated on the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern R.R., fifty-nine miles from Chicago, one hundred and eighty-four from Toledo, and twelve miles from Michigan City on Lake Michigan.
The LaPorte County Agricultural Society was organized in 1851, and is the oldest in the State.
W., came to Laporte in 1854, served as sheriff five years, was elected mayor and served four years, and is now a police magistrate, and deacon of the Baptist Church in Laporte.
