La Salle is a city located in La Salle County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,796. La Salle lies in norther Illinois, on the Illinois River, opposite Peru. Planned in 1837, La Salle's industries include zinc products. Starved Rock is nearby.

Geography

La Salle is located at 41°20'28" North, 89°5'27" West (41.341056, -89.090834)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.7 km˛ (6.4 mi˛). 16.4 km˛ (6.3 mi˛) of it is land and 0.2 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.40% water.


Economy

La Salle is home to the Open Court Publishing Company.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,796 people, 4,161 households, and 2,471 families residing in the city. The population density is 595.6/km˛ (1,543.6/mi˛). There are 4,510 housing units at an average density of 274.2/km˛ (710.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 93.73% White, 1.28% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.07% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 8.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 4,161 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.0% are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.6% are non-families. 35.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.98.


In the city the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $32,491, and the median income for a family is $44,638. Males have a median income of $37,095 versus $21,334 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,099. 15.7% of the population and 12.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.2% of those under the age of 18 and 8.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

City boundaries extend from the Illinois River and Illinois Michigan Canal to just north of Interstate 80 and from the city of Peru on the west to the village of North Utica on the east.
During the 1830's, the Illinois and Michigan Canal was built to connect the Illinois River with Lake Michigan.

The Illinois and Michigan Canal ran 96 miles (155 km) from the Bridgeport neighborhood in Chicago on the Chicago River to LaSalle, Illinois on the Illinois River.
Construction on the canal began in 1836, although it was stopped for several years due to an Illinois state fiscal crisis.
The Chicago Sanitary District (now The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District) was created by the Illinois legislature in 1889 in response to a terrible epidemic which killed thousands of residents of this fledgling city.
