Lake County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 7,954. Its county seat is Tiptonville6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 502 km˛ (194 mi˛). 423 km˛ (163 mi˛) of it is land and 79 km˛ (30 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 15.68% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,954 people, 2,410 households, and 1,614 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km˛ (49/mi˛). There are 2,716 housing units at an average density of 6/km˛ (17/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 66.63% White, 31.19% Black or African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 1.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,410 households out of which 28.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.20% are married couples living together, 16.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.00% are non-families. 30.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.92.


In the county, the population is spread out with 17.70% under the age of 18, 13.70% from 18 to 24, 33.80% from 25 to 44, 21.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 151.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 163.40 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $21,995, and the median income for a family is $30,339. Males have a median income of $25,082 versus $18,700 for females. The per capita income for the county is $10,794. 23.60% of the population and 19.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 35.10% of those under the age of 18 and 25.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

TN Encyclopedia: LAKE COUNTY (1038 words)
Located in the northwest corner of Tennessee, Lake County is bounded by Kentucky on the north, Reelfoot Lake and Obion County on the east, the Mississippi River on the west, and Dyer County on the south.
In recognition of the difficulty associated with crossing the "scatters of the Lake" (a swampy area extending south from the lake to the Obion River), a special Circuit Court was established in 1858 for the portion of Obion County lying west of Reelfoot Lake.
Lake County's economy is based on agriculture, with cotton and soybeans the chief crops.
