The Lake County Railroad, based in Lakeview, is owned and operated by the Lake County Government. It runs from Lakeview down to Alturas and back every Thursday. They haul product for both the Perlite mine and lumber from the Fremont Lumber Company. Motive power is two EMD GP's, one inherited from the Great Western Railroad from when they ceased operating the line and the other is the ex-Columbia & Cowlitz #700.
It is among the largest Oregon counties in area but with a population of just 7,422 (as of the 2000 census) it is one of the state's least populated.
In the county, the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 5.10% from 18 to 24, 24.30% from 25 to 44, 28.10% from 45 to 64, and 17.70% who are 65 years of age or older.
LakeCounty was created from Jackson and Wasco Counties on October 24, 1874 by the State Legislature.
