The lake itself is 30 km long. It is surrounded by several communities. The Township of Lake Cowichan is located on the east end of the lake and is the largest community. Along the south side of the lake are the communities of Honeymoon Bay and Mesachie Lake as well as the Gordon Bay Provincial Park. On the north side is community of Youbou.
