The townsite of Lake Grace is located in the central agricultural district, 347 km east south east of Perth. The area was first taken up for agriculture around 1911, and in 1913 a school was established here and named Lake Grace after the nearby lake. In 1914 the government planned to extend the railway network from Kukerin to Lake Grace, and local settlers lobbied for a townsite to be declared at the terminus. The railway was constructed in 1916, and terminated close to the site of the existing school. The townsite of Lake Grace was gazetted later in 1916. The first hospital in LakeGrace was built in 1926 and is one of only 2 remaining AIM [Australian Inland Mission] Hospitals built by "Flynn of the Outback", to provide medical care in remote areas of Australia during the 1920s and 30s.
The current LakeGrace District Hospital is a solid brick and tile structure, built in 1950, then stated as being "the most modern hospital in the Southern Hemisphere", and was later judged to have significant heritage value and was listed by the Heritage Council in 1999.
LakeGrace is geographically isolated with the nearest hospital at Wagin [125 km].
The clearing of the land around LakeGrace at the turn of the century has resulted in the whole area experiencing long term salinity problems as the water table rises to the surface bringing dissolved salts with it.
Entry to LakeGrace township from Dumbleyung involves crossing a narrow causeway across the lake which offers an excellent opportunity to observe the level of salination in the lake.
The area around LakeGrace is noted for the variety of small mammals including the western mouse, white tailed dunnart, Mitchell's hopping mouse and the ashy-grey mouse.
