Lakki Marwat was created as an administrative district on July 1st 1992. Prior to that it was part of Bannu district. The district derives its name from the district headquarter town. It lies at the tail of the Marwat area that is why it is called Lakai, meaning tail in local dialect. As Marwat tribe inhibits the Lakki (Lakai) town, it is called Lakki Marwat. According to the elders of the area, the original founder of Lakki Marwat village was Lakki Ram or Luko Ram a Hindu. The name of Lakki village is attributed to him. According to 1998 Census, Lakki Marwat has a population of 490025 (250336 males & 239680 females). Out of those only 46,878 persons or 9.6 percent of the population live in urban areas, which grew at an average rate of 5.5 percent during 1981-1998, while, 443,147 persons or 90.4 percent of the population lives in the rural areas. There is only one municipal committee and one town committee in the district. There were 157 mauzas (villages/ a mauza is a smallest revenue unit in the district) in 1998. Out of those 30 had population over 5 thousand, 46 had 2 to 5 thousand, 31 had one to two thousand, 49 had under one thousand persons, while one village was uninhibited. This population is spread over 3164 sq. km, with population density of 155 persons per sq. km, as compared to the population density of 233 persons per sq. km, in the NWFP. The population density during 1981, in this area was 91 persons per sq. km, which indicates a fast growth rate of the district. The average household size of the district is 9.2 persons per household as compared to 8 at the provincial level.
