Upon the NewJersey side of the river, between Salem and Alloway's Creek, Fort Nya Elfsborg was constructed in 1643.
While in 1700 there were many in West Jersey who spoke Swedish; by the middle of the century the tongue was almost forgotten; and by 1800, except for the retention of a few words, Swedish was a dead language upon the NewJersey shore of the Delaware.
