Konohagakure
Konohagakure

Although Konoha, much like the country in which it resides, has been peaceful for the past twelve years and has grown accustomed to that peace, it remains one of the most powerful villages in existence, with an overall ninja population much greater than that of any other village, and therefore has great military power and influence. In the Chunin exam, out of all 153 Genin participants, Konoha had 87 Leaf Genin (72 in the anime) trying to become Chunin, whereas all other ninja villages had considerably fewer participating: 30 Sand Genin, 21 Rain Genin, 6 Grass Genin (15 in the anime), 6 Waterfall Genin (12 in the anime), and 3 Sound Genin (Kabuto Yakushi and his teammates were counted as Leaf Genin). However, Konoha is the village that hosted the event, which possibly contributed to the unbalanced number of participants. The hiragana あん (an) is painted on the entrance gates of the village (one hiragana on each door). This means hermitage or retreat (kanji: 庵). Forest of Death

The Forest of Death (死の森 Shi no Mori?), also known as the 44th battle training zone, was the stage for the second part of the Konoha Chunin exams. Its primary function served as a testing grounds for the survival and fighting skills of Genin trying to become a Chunin. There are four entrances into the forest. A metallic fence surrounds its perimeter with 44 gates equally spaced around it; this perimeter is where the ninja enter to initiate the test. Inside is a river, the forest, and a tower located in the center; the forest's radius is about ten kilometers. “km” redirects here. ...

The tower is the destination of the ninja after they have collected two scrolls. Each team starts with only one scroll; therefore, to pass the exam, a team must find a team with the opposite scroll and steal it by any means necessary. Inside the tower is the large arena in which the third test preliminaries are held, if too many teams manage to survive to that point. Relatively few teams complete this part of the test; in the Chunin exam arc, seven teams completed the test, prompting preliminary matches.

Ichiraku Ramen Bar

The Ichiraku Ramen Bar is Naruto Uzumaki's and Iruka Umino's favorite place to eat. The Ichiraku Ramen Bar is run by Teuchi and his daughter Ayame. The two seem to be some of the few civilian villagers of Konoha to not see Naruto in a hostile light, and consider him their favorite regular. Ayame, however, is currently on a trip to an unknown location, and is temporarily being replaced by two less-than-competent male cooks, Nishi and Matsu. The Ninja Academy is the training center for Academy Ninja before they become Genin. Known teachers at the academy include Iruka Umino and formerly Mizuki. In front of the blackboard is a podium situated far from the students' desks and put in a position where the teacher can view everyone at once. Aburame clan

The Aburame clan (油女一族 Aburame Ichizoku?, "Aburame family") is a clan characterized by their use of insects as weapons. The insects live in symbiosis within the body of the shinobi. At birth, members of this clan are offered to a special breed of insects as a nest, residing just under their host's skin. The insects can leave and enter through various pores, apparently by eating their way through the skin. The insects are called kikaichu or kikai mushi (destruction bugs) in Japanese or "parasitic beetles" in the English language dub. They feed on chakra as a food source, making them quite deadly. The relationship between the shinobi and the insects is mutually beneficial. The host grants the bugs shelter and allows them to feed off their chakra, their body becoming a living hive, and in return the bugs do the user's bidding, allowing the shinobi to perform ninjutsu-like techniques without the use of hand seals or chakra conversion. A female bug can be left on a target, which then can be tracked by smell by the male bug, or scout bugs can be sent out and return to tell the host information about the area. For this reason, Aburame clan members are experts in espionage; they can communicate with the bugs, and the bugs specialize in stealth because they make no noise or motion during combat. In addition to utilizing insects in battle, the Aburame clan also studies insects. A major defining trait of the Aburame clan is that all of its known members wear dark sunglasses that hide their eyes as well as jackets that cover part of their face. Akimichi clan

The Akimichi clan (秋道一族 Akimichi Ichizoku?, "Akimichi family") is a clan that is able to convert calories into chakra, which they then use in their hidden technique, Multi-Size Technique and its various related jutsu. If standard calories aren't enough for a battle, Akimichi can use the clan's Three Colored Pills (三色の丸薬 Sanshoku no Ganyaku?) to convert excess fat into chakra. The pills, colored green (spinach), yellow (curry), and red (pepper), make them increasingly stronger, with the red pill giving the consumer 100 times their usual strength. As a result of the pills' burning of the body's reserves, the user's health sees a drastic decline with each pill they take, the red pill itself said to be fatal to the user. All Hyuga clan members are born with the Byakugan, the inherited kekkei genkai of the clan. The clan revolves around the Byakugan and is separated into two parts, the main house (宗家 Sōke?) and the branch house (分家 Bunke?), a creation that protects the secrets of the Byakugan from outsiders. The main house runs the family while the branch house protects it. The members of the branch house are branded with a cursed seal. This seal gives the main house members absolute control over the branch members, because they can destroy the branch members' brains with a simple hand gesture, or cause them great pain to punish them. This seal also makes sure the secret of the Hyuga's Byakugan is safe, because it seals the Byakugan after the wearer of the seal dies. There seems to be a great deal of bad blood between members of the main and branch houses, most likely due to the fact that no matter how powerful branch members become, they exist solely to protect the Hyuga secrets. This can be seen in the attitudes of Hizashi, who is angry about this restriction on his son, and Neji, who believed for years that his father was forced to die to protect the main house. Members of the clan are instructed in the use of the Gentle Fist style, which uses the Byakugan to view the opponent's chakra circulatory system and deal precise blows to disable and impede the flow of chakra. Due to training in this style, Hyuga clan members tend to have excellent chakra control. This is emphasized in jutsu that utilize this chakra control, as well as the nuances of the Gentle Fist style. The clan's strongest techniques, Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms and Eight Trigrams Palms Heavenly Spin, are only allowed to be taught to members of the main house. Neji Hyuga, however, has bypassed this restriction by learning them on his own, earning a reputation as a "genius" in the clan. Kurama clan

The Kurama clan is a clan of extremely skilled genjutsu users, introduced in the anime. This talent in genjutsu is due to the unnamed kekkei genkai that the clan possesses. However, once every few generations, a member of the clan will be born with such enormous skill in genjutsu that their illusions can actually produce tangible effects that occur in reality. The clan member's talent in the field is such that their genjutsu is completely irresistible, so much so that only knocking a person unconscious has any chance of awakening them from it. Furthermore, the genjutsu is so powerful that it causes the brain to make anything that happens to the victim within the genjutsu physically real, allowing the clan member to potentially kill their opponents with genjutsu. Such frightening power is not without its drawbacks, however. The user can rarely control the full extent of their abilities, and as such their subconscious will often regulate that power, leading to the creation of a second personality in control of that power. This personality then overwhelms the original, turning the individual into a monster that is a danger to everyone around them. They were originally one of the more prominent clans in Konohagakure, but the number of ninjas in the clan has severely dwindled.

Despite Danzo's apparent support for the Hokage and Konoha, Tsunade does not trust him; this is apparently well founded, as Danzo had given Sai a secret mission that Tsunade was unaware of: sending Sai to contact Orochimaru and offer to act as a subordinate for him. Yamato believes that Danzo is trying to take over Konoha with Orochimaru's help. This is apparently proven when it is revealed that the envelope Danzo sent Orochimaru was full of pictures and information on the true identities of Konoha's ANBU. However, all of these are nothing more than a front to let Sai get close to Orochimaru, so that Sai can execute his true mission: the assassination of Sasuke Uchiha. After learning of the failed assassination attempt of Sasuke, and Sai's attachment to Team Kakashi, he merely states that "emotion brings hatred, and hatred brings war." Akamaru
  • Age: 31-42 in Part I, 6 in Part II
  • Seiyū: Junko Takeuchi
  • Voice acting: Jamie Simone

Akamaru (赤丸?) is Kiba Inuzuka's nin-dog (忍犬 ninken?), best friend, and companion. In Part I, Kiba carries Akamaru around on top of his head or inside his jacket. In Part II, Akamaru grows large enough for Kiba to ride on his back, a difference Kiba fails to notice due to the amount of time they spend together. Akamaru's heightened senses, such as smell and hearing, along with Kiba's ability to communicate with him, make him a powerful tool for gathering and sharing information; he can also sense chakra with his nose, so he can judge an enemy's strength and warn Kiba if they are particularly powerful. In combat, Akamaru typically takes Kiba's form (albeit having a much more feral appearance) upon Kiba's use of Beast Human Clone (獣人分身 Jūjin Bunshin?, English TV "Man Beast Clone"), or combining with Kiba into a single entity in more desperate situations. Because Akamaru lacks his own chakra reserves Kiba performs many of the jutsu that Akamaru takes part in, though Akamaru is able to contribute when it comes to physical attacks. Akamaru can also use Dynamic Marking (ダイナミックマーキング Dainamikku Mākingu?) by urinating on a target with great accuracy, allowing either Kiba or Akamaru to easily find the target by scent, particularly when fused together. Tonton

Tonton (トントン?) is Tsunade's pet pig, often kept in the care of Shizune. She does not speak in any human language, but still manages to get her point across by whining in her own unique tone – which in the original anime sounds like "buhi" (the sound made by pigs in Japanese culture, similar to the onomatopoeia "oink" in English, which is also used in the dub). It seems that Tsunade and Shizune are able to understand what Tonton is trying to say. Tonton's nose also seems adept at tracking things.

When Hiashi killed a shinobi from Kumogakure that was trying to kidnap Hinata, Kumogakure demanded that the body of Hiashi be delivered to them as compensation as directed in the terms of their peace treaty with Konoha. Hiashi's brother, Hizashi, volunteered to be killed instead of Hiashi, thus saving his life. Both Matsu and Nishi bear resemblance to two characters from the third Naruto movie.

Isaribi

Isaribi (漁り火?) was a human test subject under the control of Amachi who in turn used to work for Orochimaru. The test was meant to give shinobi the ability to breathe and operate underwater. Isaribi was one of the first test subjects, and was not the final version. She was sent back to the Land of the Sea to spy on the ships leaving port. Due to her bandages, which were used to cover the permanently scaled parts of her body, the villagers attacked her and vandalized her property. She returned with Naruto to Konoha after Amachi's defeat hoping that Tsunade can cure her.

Legendary Stupid Brothers

The Legendary Stupid Brothers (伝説のバカ兄弟 Densetsu no Bakakyōdai?), also known as the "Fujin-Raijin Brothers" (風神・雷神兄弟 Fūjin-Raijin Kyōdai?), are a pair of criminal ninja. Fujin (風神 Fūjin?, literally Wind God), being the eldest and slightly more intelligent, makes the decisions for the pair, and his brother, Raijin (雷神? literally Thunder God), does whatever he asks. The two are quite large, strong, and equally unintelligent (hence the name). Their thoughts revolve entirely around food, and the pursuit of it is all that motivates them. During a mission, they killed their comrades for food, then calmed down immediately after doing so. They were locked up after the incident. In reality, even the prison was incapable of containing them. It was the guards' control of their food supply that kept them in line.

They cause trouble for Naruto and Team 10 after being tricked by Mizuki into causing a riot and escaping (having been told that Orochimaru would provide good food for them every day). They are eventually stopped by Tsunade. Both seem to recognize her, and are scared into submission by her extreme strength, which is great enough to send even them flying with a single flick. She convinces them to return to the prison by telling them that they will not receive dinner if they don't return quickly. Madara Uchiha (うちはマダラ Uchiha Madara?) founded the Uchiha clan during the early days of Konoha. He also helped to found Konoha itself. "Madara" means "mottles" or "speckles". He was a friend of the First Hokage. The two eventually did battle at the Valley of the End, where a monument of their battle now stands in tribute to the two shinobi. Jiraiya suspects that Madara summoned the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox to attack Konoha years before the start of the series. Menma

Menma was a former member of a group of bandits originating from the Land of Rice Fields. His real name is unknown, Menma being a name given by Naruto. He left the gang after a member killed a man in front of his daughter while raiding a town. After saving the girl from a similar death, the boy acquires a case of amnesia as a result of falling off a cliff (it was actually a "memory blocking jutsu"). Naruto soon rescues the boy while returning from a mission and sidetracking to get a "legendary fermented bamboo" for Ichiraku Ramen and takes him back to Konoha to recover, while there giving him the nickname Menma (which means fermented bamboo). Kenji Nojima (野島 健児 Nojima Kenji, born March 16, 1976) is a seiyū who was born in Tokyo. ...

When the hospital that he is staying at catches fire, Menma's memory returns while he saves an infant, much to his dismay. After being permitted to stay, Menma builds a good reputation with the village elders, along with Naruto, by performing various odd jobs. After a bandit attacks, they go on a search for Menma's memories along with Neji and Tenten. He eventually sacrifices himself in order to set off an explosion to prevent the bandits from flooding the village, saving the village. Menma's death noticeably affected Naruto, who soon after pretended to have the "legendary fermented ramen" with Menma's ocarina, the last remaining memento of Menma.

Menma was able to use ninjutsu with his ocarina (similar to Tayuya's abilities), enhancing an individual's strength and speed, and could move more quickly than Neji did at top speed. These abilities caused Neji and Tenten to suspect that he was a ninja from the Land of Sound.

Sakumo Hatake
  • Age: ? (deceased)

Sakumo Hatake (はたけサクモ Hatake Sakumo?), also known as Konoha's White Fang (木ノ葉の白い牙 Konoha no Shiroi Kiba?), was the father of Kakashi Hatake. Sakumo was the enemy of Chiyo's son. According to the Fourth Hokage, Sakumo was once respected more than the Legendary Three Ninjas before he fell into disgrace after choosing to save his comrades rather than complete a mission, causing Konohagakure to suffer in the war effort. This caused many people, including those he had saved, to hate him. Dishonored, Sakumo committed seppuku after deep depression and a drop in his skills, which caused Kakashi to lead his life strictly according to the Ninja code. Sakumo left his White Light Chakra Sabre (白光チャクラ刀 Hakkō Chakura To?), for which he was nicknamed, to Kakashi, which utilized chakra to produce a trail of white light from the blade when swung (the blade being the metaphorical "fang"). Shisui was the best friend of Itachi Uchiha; in fact, Itachi thought of him as an older brother. He was found drowned in a river from what appeared to be suicide, though the Konoha Military Police believed it to be murder. It was later revealed that Shisui had been ordered to keep tabs on Itachi. Itachi later admitted to Sasuke Uchiha that he had murdered Shisui to obtain the Mangekyo Sharingan, forging Shisui's handwriting on his suicide note with the help of the Sharingan. Unkai Kurama

Unkai Kurama is Yakumo Kurama's uncle, and a member of the branch family of the Kurama clan. Overall, he cared about his clan above all other things, even Yakumo's life. After the death of Yakumo's parents, Unkai petitioned with fellow clan members to have Yakumo killed. The Third Hokage denied their requests, and it seems they have given up on them. He is a very strong genjutsu user, even capable of escaping Kurenai's genjutsu, though having to forfeit his battle with her and retreat.

Yakumo Kurama

Yakumo is the last surviving member of the main branch of the Kurama clan, and as such, the heiress to the clan. She inherited the clan's kekkei genkai in its entirety, giving her the ability to cast illusions that are so powerful that they can actually produce real effects. She often uses paintings as a conduit to cast these illusions, causing reality to reflect what is on the painting. Born with a weak body, she was unable to perform the physical activities required of a ninja. Worried about this development, her father petitioned the Third Hokage to grant Yakumo a special tutor to allow her to become a proper ninja. This tutor was Kurenai Yuhi, who was a genjutsu user like Yakumo. Inspired by the example of Rock Lee, who was unable to use ninjutsu or genjutsu, and his relationship with his sensei Might Guy, Yakumo believed she could become a ninja through solely concentrating upon her genjutsu skills. However, Kurenai lacked Guy's optimism, and felt she was unable to train Yakumo in this regard. She eventually refused to train Yakumo, instructing her to seek another path in life. Yakumo refused, though, and Kurenai later sealed her powers. This was done on the order of the Third Hokage, as he had been made aware of the Idou monster, a sentient, malicious personality within Yakumo that could control her and use her incredible powers to destructive means - with the destruction of Konohagakure foremost in his mind. However, the Idou monster overcame the seal, and cast an illusion of a fire engulfing the Kurama clan's household, which killed Yakumo's parents. Yakumo, however, believed that the fire was started on the order of the Third Hokage, having overheard a conversation that she believed indicated that the Third Hokage was planning to kill her if she became too much of a threat. Seeking revenge on Konohagakure, and specifically Kurenai, Yakumo returned in an anime filler arc, where she trapped the entire village under an illusion of her own making. In the course of events, Yakumo eventually overcomes the Idou's influence and kills it with her palette knife. After that she finally makes peace with Konoha and her former teacher.
