Encyclopedia > Land of Sound

The Land of Sound (音の国 Oto no Kuni?) is a geographical feature in the Naruto anime and manga series. It was likely named after the Otogakure, which Orochimaru founded, and both refer to what could be considered as one political entity. Serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump Shonen Jump BANZAI! The Land of Sound, along with Otogakure, is a relatively new country in the political scene, though the country itself existed long before Orochimaru took it over and renamed it. It conspired with the Land of Wind to launch a surprise attack and hopefully destroy the Land of Fire. Instead of using elemental jutsu, Sound ninja use sonic-based jutsu, often augmented by various devices. The Land of Wind ) is a geographical feature in the Naruto anime and manga series. ... In the anime, the country in which Orochimaru established his village is named the "Land of Rice Fields" or "Rice Field Country" (田の国 Ta no Kuni?). Orochimaru seems to have renamed it after his takeover.

Otogakure

Otogakure (音隠れの里 Otogakure no Sato?, literally "Village Hidden in Sound") was founded by Orochimaru as a part of the Land of Sound, and is run by him. Not much is known about it: what is certain is that it actually consists of a series of lairs, located both within the Sound country and away from it, which Orochimaru switches between every week. Other than that, and the fact that its ninja specialize in techniques involving manipulation of sound waves, as well as using a cursed seal to increase their power, little else is known about it. Although he is the leading ninja of Otogakure, Orochimaru isn't a Kage, despite his equivalent power level. The reason for this is because the five Kages of the five great Hidden Villages don't acknowledge Otogakure, and certainly would not acknowledge a criminal like Orochimaru.

Orochimaru

Main article: Orochimaru

Orochimaru is the leader of the village and country. Though he is not a Kage, he has been nicknamed the Otokage ("Sound Shadow") by fans due to his Kage-level power and knowledge. Orochimaru is also one of the Legendary Three Ninja of Konoha. Though he is essentially the military dictator of the Sound village, he does not live in it. For most of the series, he is seen using a secret underground base as his headquarters. After Sasuke joins him, Kabuto mentions that they move into a new base every week. Orochimaru ) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Naruto created by Masashi Kishimoto and a major antagonist of the series. ...

Kabuto Yakushi

Kabuto Yakushi (薬師カブト Yakushi Kabuto?) is Orochimaru's personal medic, assistant, and general right-hand man. As a young boy he was found on a battlefield by a chief medical officer of the Konoha Medical Unit Squad. The officer brought Kabuto with him back to Konoha, raised him as a son, and taught him medical jutsu when he got older. Kabuto went on to spy for many different villages and groups before joining Orochimaru. Kabuto has since used his numerous other affiliations to spy for Orochimaru, such as using his status as a Genin of Konoha to enter the semiannual Chunin Exams and gather information on his fellow participants for Orochimaru's use. Despite his apparent loyalty to Orochimaru, Kabuto's true personality is difficult to discern; he frequently switches from a lighthearted and polite teenager to a twisted and sadistic maniac that enjoys playing mind games with his opponents. While he generally obeys Orochimaru's orders, he is not above healing Orochimaru's enemies or trying to strike up polite conversations with Naruto Uzumaki when they meet. Orochimaru himself seems to have a hard time determining Kabuto's thoughts, and has suggested that Kabuto secretly works against him. Kabuto is a talented ninja, being compared to Kakashi Hatake in ability on more than one occasion, as well as being shown capable of killing ANBU members with relative ease. The bulk of Kabuto's fighting ability lies in the medical jutsu taught to him by his adoptive father. Through his allegiance to Orochimaru he has also gained many bodies that he can experiment on, allowing him to take his medical abilities to new levels. With his extensive knowledge of the human body he can use Secret Healing Wound Destruction (陰癒傷滅 In'yu Shōmetsu?) to reactivate dead cells in a concentrated area and grow new ones. While he uses this ability in battle to immediately recover from attacks, it can also be used during his experiments to keep test subjects alive for much longer than is feasible. Kabuto can even use the Dead Soul Technique (死魂の術 Shikon no Jutsu?) to temporarily reanimate a corpse for use as an ally or a decoy. During Tsunade's battle with him, she remarks that his fighting and healing abilities surpass her own when she was his age. After Orochimaru's defeat, Kabuto integrates his master's remains into his body as a means to become more powerful and to no longer be the mere tool of others. Sound Four

The Sound Four (音隠れの忍四人衆 Otogakure no Shinobi Yonin Shū?, literally Hidden Sound Shinobi Four People) are Orochimaru's elite bodyguards. Each has been given a cursed seal by Orochimaru. Their official ninja rank is not defined, but each one is at least quite above Genin level. The Sound Four were forced to accept Kimimaro Kaguya into their ranks for a short time (making them the Sound Five), as he was stronger than all of their combined strength. All of them repeatedly refer to their opponents as "trash". As a group, the Sound Four are able to create a number of different barriers; Four Violet Flames Battle Encampment (四紫炎陣 Shishienjin?, English "Four Flames Formation"), for instance, allows them to create a box-like barrier around them that causes anything that touches it to burst into flames. To prevent themselves from being attacked and thus bringing down the barrier, the Sound Four create the same barrier around themselves. Jirobo

Jirobo (次郎坊 Jirōbō?) is the corpulent, physically strongest member of the Sound Four, albeit the least powerful, according to the other members. He utilizes his strength through his Achiever of Nirvana Fist (羅漢拳 Rakanken?) fighting style, which focuses on simple physical attacks augmented with his incredible strength. Using palm strikes, shoulder thrusts, knee strikes, and punches, Jirobo can easily defeat an opponent in one or two blows. His strength is so great that he is able to lift boulder-sized rocks with ease and hurl them at opponents. Jirobo can absorb chakra, as seen with his Earth Release Barrier: Dungeon Chamber of Nothingness (土遁結界・土牢堂無 Doton Kekkai: Dorōdōmu?, English TV "Earth Style Barrier: Earth Dome Prison"). With it, Jirobo can trap unsuspecting opponents in a dome of self-repairing rock, through which he can absorb their chakra as a form of sustenance. When in level 2 cursed seal form, his skin becomes red (covered in large warts) and his mohawk becomes a mane down his back. Despite his size, Jirobo dislikes being called fat and he verbally scolds Tayuya when she uses foul language. Despite this, he proceeds to call Choji Akimichi fat near-constantly during their battle. Jirobo also thinks of Shikamaru Nara as stupid, and taunts Choji by claiming that Shikamaru threw him away as the least useful member of his team. Because of these insults to Shikamaru (and because Jirobo ate his last potato chip), Choji puts his all into the battle, eventually allowing him to kill Jirobo. Kidomaru

Kidomaru (鬼童丸 Kidōmaru?) is the spider-like member of the Sound Four; he possesses four extra arms and has the ability to make webs. His level 2 cursed seal form makes him even more spider-like; his skin becomes darker, and he grows long, white hair. While in this form he opens the third eye on his forehead (which he normally keeps covered with his Sound headband) to improve the accuracy of his attacks. Kidomaru is an excellent tactical analyst, capable of determining his enemy's weak point quickly and efficiently. Kidomaru prefers fighting from a distance, lending him a considerable advantage and allowing him to avoid close-combat. He generally sees a battle as a game, and often plays around with the opponent too much because he prefers to have fun seeing the opponent struggle. His speech also reflects this - when battling Neji Hyuga, he, instead of calling Neji "trash", called him a trash character, and claimed that it was his fate to die first. He also analyzes his predicament using the same language as the typical gamer. Susumu Chiba ), born September 13, 1970, is a seiyÅ« (voice actor). ... Kidomaru's webbing is made of a special type of liquid that is created by infusing body liquid with chakra. He can increase the strength of this webbing by infusing additional chakra into it during its creation, allowing him to create webbing as strong as steel. The more basic form of this webbing is excreted from his mouth, and he spits it directly from there during combat to capture opponents. Kidomaru can create a stronger, golden webbing called Spider Sticky Gold (蜘蛛粘金 Kumo Nenkin?) that hardens upon contact with oxygen to metal-like quality and is impervious to chakra. He can fashion this substance into kunai or he can excrete it from his pores to give him a temporary defensive measure. He also uses the substance for his Spider War Bow: Terrible Split (蜘蛛戦弓・凄裂 Kumo Senkyū: Susaku?), creating a bow and arrow of his own design. This ability acts as his trump card, as he can use it to attack from long distances and can create uniquely shaped arrows to fit the battle he is in, such as improving its speed or power. When he attaches a web-string to an arrow during his battle with Neji to increase its accuracy, Neji is able to send chakra down the string and back to Kidomaru. With Kidomaru unable to move as a result, he is killed by Neji.

Kimimaro Kaguya

Kimimaro Kaguya (かぐや君麻呂 Kaguya Kimimaro?) is the sole survivor of the Kaguya clan (かぐや一族 Kaguya Ichizoku?), which was wiped out when they attacked Kirigakure for the thrill of battle. Kimimaro was referred to by Orochimaru as the most powerful member of the clan, causing him to be locked away in a cage for most of his life, only released occasionally when needed to fight, causing severe mental problems due to lack of purpose. After the deaths of his family he was found by Orochimaru, and developed a strong devotion towards him bordering on religious zealotry, as he saw Orochimaru as the only person who cared for and inspired him. Despite his abilities and heritage, Kimimaro was not truly violent because he never really knew the outside world. Thus, the only reason he fought was because his clan needed him to do so, and being needed by someone was the one thing he truly desired. These views change upon meeting Orochimaru, where his desires change to serving him and ensuring the continuation of his master's dreams and ambitions. This lack of interest in killing allowed him to form a friendship with Jugo at one point, and he acted as the only person capable of stopping Jugo's rampages. The Kaguya clan's kekkei genkai, Shikotsumyaku (屍骨脈? literally "Dead Bone Pulse"), gives Kimimaro the ability to manipulate his skeletal structure. In doing so, Kimimaro can control his bone growth, density, and shape, such that he can regrow lost bones or protrude new bones from his skin like spikes (although not leaving any injury to the skin itself, as it heals as soon as the bone retracts). This also allows him to make his bones harder than steel, or create bone swords of such strength that they can cut through steel. He can even create a super-hard layer of bone under their skin, making his body virtually indestructible. When in his cursed seal level 2 form, his appearance becomes similar to that of a dinosaur, with dark gray skin, six large bone spines on the back of his chest, and a long bone-spiked tail. He possesses a great deal of control over his cursed seal, as he is able to control its spread throughout his body without fully activating it. Kimimaro's only weakness is a terminal illness that he constantly suffers from. The sickness seems to have been recently developed, as he was once a prime candidate for Orochimaru's next host body. After being left bedridden and on life support, Kimimaro sets out to retrieve Orochimaru's new host: Sasuke Uchiha. He is forced into battle with Naruto and then Rock Lee and Gaara. Although he is almost able to kill them both, he succumbs to his illness and dies, succumbing so suddenly that he pauses a few inches from stabbing Gaara through the head. For some odd reason, he remains in his Level 2 form after death while the rest of the Sound Five returned to their normal forms when defeated. Sakon and Ukon

Sakon (左近?) and the older Ukon (右近?) are twin brothers who share positions in the Sound Four. To help distinguish between the two, Sakon wears beads around his neck and Ukon has a somewhat deeper voice along with a more violent manner of speech. With their kekkei genkai, Sakon and Ukon are able to merge with the bodies of others. Ukon generally uses this ability to remain within Sakon's body where he can bring out some of his body parts to aid Sakon in blocking or attacking. Ukon can separate from Sakon's body so that the two can attack independently, though he is not used to moving on his own and thus tires easily. In addition to combining with each other, Sakon or Ukon can merge with an opponent's body, destroying their cells from the inside to slowly kill them. While within another's body, however, they are vulnerable to whatever injuries befall upon the host, in theory allowing the host to commit suicide to kill either of the brothers. When in their level 2 cursed seal form, each is given increased healing abilities and armor as well as becoming ogre-like in appearance. Sakon and Ukon are very twisted and enjoy bad-mouthing the opposition. Orochimaru notes Sakon to be the fastest and strongest member of the Sound Four, traits Sakon is very proud of. When in battle Sakon likes to prolong the fight by toying with the opponent and all the while use unnecessarily powerful techniques. This tendency of Sakon's causes him to slow down the rest of the group whenever he gets interested in an opponent. Ukon is able to counteract this flaw by being more impatient and hasty than his brother, forcing Sakon to quickly end his battles. During the Sasuke Retrieval arc, Sakon and Ukon fight and almost kill Kiba Inuzuka and Akamaru. Before they can finish the two off, however, Kankuro arrives and kills them both with his puppets, saving Kiba and Akamaru. Tayuya

Tayuya (多由也?) is the only kunoichi in the Sound Four and the only member to actually use sound as a weapon; she uses a flute in battle. Because this is her only weapon, she avoids close combat at all costs. To help her with this, she can summon three powerful demons known as the Doki (怒鬼? literally "Angry Demons") that she controls by playing different tunes on her flute. With precise timing, she can break up the Doki to attack while not leaving any openings for her opponent to counter. In addition to being very fast for their size, the Doki can also open their mouths to release a many-mouthed, snake-like creature. These snakes, being made of energy and therefore impossible to hit, absorb the energy of others on contact, thus weakening them. If the demons aren't enough to keep opponents at bay, Tayuya can use her flute to trap an opponent in a genjutsu. Once affected, the target feels as if they are tied with numerous wires, restricting their movement. Soon after, their flesh will begin to melt away from their bones, causing great pain and horror. When in level 2 cursed seal form, Tayuya's hair grows longer, her skin turns dark brown, and she grows five bone-like horns on her head. She is relatively foul-mouthed (a trait for which Jirobo berates her) and ill tempered. Tayuya is very intelligent and can think of strategies and battle tactics almost on par with Shikamaru Nara. Despite this she does not think much of Shikamaru as a leader, believing that he is a fool for sacrificing his friends at each turn. She is almost able to kill Shikamaru, but he is saved by Temari who levels the surrounding forest and crushes Tayuya under debris. Zaku Abumi (ザク・アブミ?) is fitted with hollow air tubes that extend through his arms and open through his palms. With these tubes, Zaku can attack others with a combination of air pressure and sound that is strong enough to crack stone and wipe out anything in its path. Zaku lived his life as an orphan until approached by Orochimaru, who offered him strength in exchange for loyalty. Zaku accepts, and is entered into the Chunin Exams to kill Sasuke Uchiha. Throughout the exams, Zaku shows little concern for his own safety and does whatever is necessary to complete the task at hand. He is also quick to act without thinking, and doesn't properly weigh the consequences of his actions. Zaku's preliminary match was against Shino Aburame. Shino jams his air tubes with bugs in the middle of the fight, but as Zaku does not know this he lets off two shots of his Zankuhaa. This creates an enoumous amount of pressure in his arms, causing his right arm to explode off of his body and his left arm to hang off of only several ligaments. Gen'yumaru

  • Age: 172
  • Rank: ?
  • Seiyu: Takashi Mito

Gen'yumaru (幻幽丸 Gen'yūmaru?) was Orochimaru's previous body. He was told to have a fight to the death with the others that Orochimaru had kept captive, and the winner would be able to go free. Gen'yumaru defeated and massacred them all, only to find out that he was the next vessel for Orochimaru. As his last wish, he asked for his clan to be released, which was being held captive for Orochimaru's experiments. It is unknown if this request was ever granted. Orochimaru notes that part of Gen'yumaru's consciousness would remain within him after the transfer — making Gen'yumaru still alive, in a sense. After Orochimaru abandons Gen'yumaru's body, Gen'yumaru still remains within his subconscious.

He is the most talented member of the Fuma clan, able to use the clan's most powerful jutsu, the Self-destruction Mandala (自爆曼荼羅 Jibaku Mandara?), which uses a cage of chakra that constricts, crushing the opponent. It is unknown whether he died, but it is implied that he is killed when Orochimaru's lair caves in, as his feet are stuck to the ground by the remnants of his Casualty Puppet. Kagero
  • Age: ? (deceased)
  • Unique traits: Ephemeral Vengeance
  • Seiyu: Tadahaisa Saizen (male) / Mioko Fujiwara (female)

Kagero (カゲロウ Kagerō?) was one of the members of the Fuma clan who were betrayed by Orochimaru. She was one of a three-member group who guarded Orochimaru's base in the Land of the Rice Fields. Though she was actually a young girl, she constantly disguised herself as a member of the opposite gender. While disguised, she would use the Antlion Technique (Arijigoku no Jutsu) to cause everything in a certain area to be drawn into a large pit. After removing this form, she is able to use Ephemeral Vengeance (Utakata), creating four wings out of chakra on her back. She can then fire a gigantic blast of chakra at her opponent: the amount is said to be so great that this jutsu can only be used once in a lifetime. She can also fly and teleport while in this form. Mioko Fujiwara , born April 12 in Saitama) is a seiyÅ« who works for Production Baobab. ...

She shows extensive loyalty and dedication to her fellow clan members, using her Ephemeral Vengeance even though it would endanger her life. This same respect is also shown towards Orochimaru, who Kagero views as the person who will bring the Fuma clan back into its glory. Kagero died during a fight with Naruto while disguised as Kabuto Yakushi. She constantly made references to the life of a mayfly while in her first male disguise, which makes sense, as "Kagero" can mean Mayfly. While disguised as Kabuto, Kagero uses an unnamed kamikaze technique that uses chakra strings to connect the heart of the user and the foe. When one heart stops, so does the other. This was thwarted however, by Sasame, who gave Sakura Haruno a special seal to sever the string. This article is about the Naruto character. ...

Misumi Tsurugi

Misumi Tsurugi (剣ミスミ Tsurugi Misumi?) has had his body surgically altered with the Soft Physique Modification (軟の改造 Nan no Kaizō?). This allows him to be more efficient in gathering information and allows him to dislocate his joints to fit into any space. He then controls his softened body with chakra, allowing him to stretch and twist any part of his body at any angle, elongating and even coiling around his opponent. Misumi attempts to use this ability on Kankuro during Chunin Exams by catching him in an inescapable hold and breaking his neck. While he seems to have succeeded, he in actuality breaks the neck of Kankuro's puppet, which quickly turns the tables and breaks his own neck, which his modifications allow him to survive. Jugo

Jugo (重吾 Jūgo?), also known as Jugo of the Scales (天秤の重吾 Tenbin no Jūgo?, "scale" referring to something that determines balance), is the largest member of "Snake". He is mentally unstable, sporadically fluctuating between a bloodthirsty and a docile personality. While in the former mindset, Jugo attacks anyone around him with the intention to kill, sometimes determining which gender he will kill first during conversations with himself. It is because of this uncontrollable drive for blood that Jugo, while docile, consents to being confined since he doesn't want to hurt anyone. Kimimaro Kaguya was able to control Jugo during these outbreaks, allowing him to assume a somewhat natural lifestyle where he viewed Kimimaro as a friend. Sasuke Uchiha is able to repress Jugo's killing instincts, as well, using his Sharingan. After hearing that Kimimaro sacrificed his life for Sasuke, Jugo agreed to accompany Sasuke since he believes that Kimimaro's spirit continues to live on in Sasuke. Sasuke Uchiha ) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Naruto created by Masashi Kishimoto. ...

Jugo is the source and means behind Orochimaru's development of the cursed seals. Some time in the past, Jugo purposely sought out Orochimaru to cure him of his "impulses". Jugo has trouble controlling his rage, which unexpectedly causes him to transform into a berserk demon. Upon examination, Orochimaru was able to isolate enzymes in Jugo's blood as the cause of this change. By extracting these enzymes, Orochimaru was able to use them to produce similar, but more controlled, effects in other people. When assuming one of these cursed seal transformations, Jugo is able to exercise a great deal of control over it. In addition to being able to transform only portions of his body, Jugo can alter his transformation to better suit a situation. Jugo is also able to understand birds, using them as scouts and to help him accomplish tasks. It is unknown if this is a trait of his enzymes. Karin

Karin (香燐?) is a former subordinate of Orochimaru who assisted him in his experimentations and was left in charge of one of his bases while he was away. After learning of his death she remains loyal to him by keeping the prisoners of the base in check. Karin has red eyes, matching hair color and an unusual hairstyle; her hair is short and unkempt on one side, and long and combed on the other. She will at times appear tough and in control, particularly when Suigetsu or Jugo are present. When Sasuke Uchiha is around, however, she switches to a flirtatious personality where she tends to imply a team consisting of only the two of them would be considerably better. She has an unhealthy and somewhat disturbing interest in Sasuke, as she goes so far as to keep one of his battered, sweat-drenched shirts for herself and plans to "ravage" him after everyone falls asleep. Suigetsu notes that something once happened between her and Sasuke, though what this means remains unclear since Karin punches Suigetsu before he can finish his sentence. It also allows her to pick up chakra from long distances and notice changes in an individual's chakra. Kakashi Hatake surmises that Karin is a particularly skilled chakra-sensing ninja, as she is not only able to tell that his group is approaching, but can also sense how many of them are present and that one is a dog. Suigetsu

Suigetsu (水月 Suigetsu?) is a former experimental subject of Orochimaru. Suigetsu once trained to be one of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist, and as such has a number of traits consistent with other known members. In addition to having shark-like teeth, Suigetsu enjoys killing; Kisame Hoshigaki, one of the Seven Swordsmen, says he is a prodigy at the art of murder and the second coming of the Devil Zabuza, as Suigetsu has a habit of chopping off his victim's limbs before beheading them. He is also very confident in his abilities, since he has threatened Sasuke Uchiha on more than one occasion. After joining Snake, Sasuke takes Suigetsu to retrieve Zabuza Momochi's zanbatō from his graveside. Suigetsu can wield the weapon with relative ease, but traveling longer distances with the sword strapped onto his back tires him out rather quickly. In his allegiance with Sasuke, Suigetsu hopes to acquire the sword of Kisame as well, which Karin assumes to mean that he wants to collect all of the swords of the Seven Swordsmen. Suigetsu is able to reduce himself to liquid form and to return to bodily form at will. This ability also allows him to change his body shape, giving him the ability to increase the size of his limbs, proportionally increasing his strength, if necessary. It also makes striking him somewhat difficult; since he is made of liquid, any sufficiently powerful strike will go right through his watery form. Suigetsu is the first ninja seen carrying water bottles on his outfit. Given his somewhat frequent desire to consume water, Suigetsu may require regular hydration to sustain his watery form.

Because the Sound is the "sink" for a 16,000 square mile watershed, its water quality is closely tied to the ways in which the land is used and developed.
The group's purpose was to identify the ways land use and development affect Long Island Sound water quality and habitat, and to present recommendations to improve land use planning and management throughout the Sound's watershed.
Improved land planning and use are needed to support implementation of those actions and to coordinate activities on the state, local, and federal levels and with the private sector.
