The Magic Kingdom of Landover series is a childrens quintet by Terry Brooks following the adventures of Ben Holiday, a trial lawyer who goes into a depression after the death of his wife and unborn child. ...
Landover is a finite world, surrounded on all sides by fairy mists which connect it to all other worlds, including Earth. The books in the series detail the reign of Ben Holiday, a trial lawyer from Chicago who struggles to pull Landover out of the agricultural, cultural, and economic slump that began when the rightful heir to the throne abdicated and disappeared shortly after coming to power. The previous king, now known only as "the Old King," was a beloved, noble, and effective ruler whose reign was the height of Landover prosperity. Holiday's efforts to restore Landover to its former glory are hampered by three villains: the demon lord "the Iron Mark" (or just "the Mark" for short), the dragon Strabo (the last surviving dragon, after the rest have been hunted and killed), and a witch named "Nightshade." Landover is a very rural kingdom, populated by humans, gnomes, kobolds, and various other fantasy creatures, who often form separate societies with rulers who, while answerable to the king, are allowed a certain degree of autonomy. Landover is protected by the Paladin, a magical knight who is secretly a psychic projection of its rulers; in the absence of a worthy ruler, the Paladin disappears and Landover falls prey to a physical decay known as "the Tarnish," which slowly spreads from the king's castle (Sterling Silver) to the rest of the kingdom. |
