Lansing Charter Township is a charter township in Ingham County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 8,458.


The City of Lansing has incorporated much of the land that formerly constituted the township. The township now consists of five noncontiguous tracts of land, one on the west side of the city, three on the east side, between Lansing and East Lansing and one on the southeast side of the city.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 13.1 km˛ (5.1 mi˛). 12.8 km˛ (4.9 mi˛) of it is land and 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.98% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,458 people, 4,104 households, and 2,047 families residing in the township. The population density is 659.7/km˛ (1,709.0/mi˛). There are 4,317 housing units at an average density of 336.7/km˛ (872.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is 82.93% White, 8.43% African American, 0.48% Native American, 2.07% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.17% from other races, and 2.88% from two or more races. 7.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 4,104 households out of which 22.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.3% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 50.1% are non-families. 40.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.05 and the average family size is 2.78.


In the township the population is spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.1 males.


The median income for a household in the township is $41,017, and the median income for a family is $50,632. Males have a median income of $37,124 versus $28,829 for females. The per capita income for the township is $22,885. 7.5% of the population and 5.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.2% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The western section of the township is the largest section of the township, and includes most all of the township's industrial developments including the large General Motors Lansing Craft Centre and General Motors Lansing Metral Center automobile factories, both of which were closed and shuttered in early 2006 [3].
