Lapeer County is a county located in the state of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 87,904. Its county seat is Lapeer6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,717 km˛ (663 mi˛). 1,694 km˛ (654 mi˛) of it is land and 23 km˛ (9 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.34% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 87,904 people, 30,729 households, and 23,876 families residing in the county. The population density is 52/km˛ (134/mi˛). There are 32,732 housing units at an average density of 19/km˛ (50/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 96.17% White, 0.82% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.07% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 3.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 30,729 households out of which 38.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.70% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.30% are non-families. 18.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.19.


In the county the population is spread out with 28.00% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 31.00% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 9.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 102.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.10 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $51,717, and the median income for a family is $57,817. Males have a median income of $47,506 versus $26,385 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,462. 5.40% of the population and 3.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.70% of those under the age of 18 and 7.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
