The area was named a World Heritage Site for both its natural and its cultural interest. It is one of the largest wilderness areas of Europe, and it is also part of Sapmi, the homeland of the Sami people.

The Laponianarea is a large mountaneous wildlife area in the Swedish Lapland province in northern Sweden, more precisely in the Gällivare Municipality and Jokkmokk Municipality.
The total area is about 9400 km², making it the world's largest unmodified nature area which is cultured by natives -- the natives in this case being the reindeer herding Sami people.
The highest mountain of the area is Sarektjåhkkå, with 2,089 meters.
