The Large Palau Flying Fox (Pteropus pilosus) is an extinct species of middle-sized megabat from the Palau Islands in Micronesia. It had a wingspan of about 60 cm. It had brownish fur with long, silvery hairs on its belly. It probably became extinct around 1874, possibly due to hunting by people. It is known from two specimens, one of which is in the Natural History Museum in London. My own subjective impression of them after years of close interactions, at least with the genus Pteropus (the largest flyingfoxes), is that they are keenly aware of quite subtle changes in their environment in a way comparable with, or even superior to, the prosimian primates I have known.
Flyingfoxes are some of the only bats that fall into this group.
Flyingfoxes are a traditional delicacy with the resident Chamorro culture of the Marianas.
Flyingfoxes eat fruit and this has inevitably brought them into conflict with humans who grow fruit, especialy when the bats preferred natural resources have been logged out of existance and replanted as monoculture.
FlyingFoxes, along with all other native bats are now protected in Australia however the path to protection has been a rocky one for the FlyingFoxes.
Prior to 1985 FlyingFoxes were not protected in New South Wales, in fact they were reguarded as vermin.
