Lasbela is one of oldest districts of Balochistan province of Pakistan. It was notified on 30 June 1954. Lasbela became a separate district in Kalat division. The district of Lasbela derives its name from the words LAS which signifies a plain, the greater part of the area being a flat plain, and Bela, the principle town of the district. Uthal is the district headquarters. Alexander the Great passed through Lasbela on his way back to Babylon after conquering Pakistan. In 711 AD, Arab general, Muhammad-Bin-Qasim, who passed through Makran on his way to Sindh. The population os Lasbela is estimated to be over 700,000 in 2005. More than 97% of the population is Muslim with small Hindu minority. The majority of population speaks Balochi and there is a large Sindhi speaking minority.
