Encyclopedia > Latin Quarter

The Quartier Latin (Latin Quarter) is an area in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, France, around the Sorbonne University.

The name derives from the Latin language, which was widely spoken in the Middle Ages in and around the University.

It currently still houses various higher education establishments, such as the École Normale Supérieure, the École des Mines and the Jussieu university campus.

The Quartier Latin is an area in the Ville-Marie borough of Montreal, surrounding UQAM and lower Saint-Denis Street, between downtown and the Village gai. It is known for its theatres, artistic atmosphere, cafés, and boutiques.

It owes its name to the presence of the nascent University of Montreal in the 1920s. In the 1940s the university moved out and headed for a new campus on the north slopes of Mount Royal, far from the downtown borough. In the late 1960s UQAM was born and established itself in the Ville Marie borough, giving a modern underpinning to the name. A large junior college, the CEGEP du Vieux-Montreal also moved in at about the same period.

Owned by Lou Walters, father of ABC 20/20's Barbara Walters, the Latin Quarter was a mid-century mecca for big-named entertainers who performed for winter crowds of tourists and celebrities arriving in Miami Beach each December.
Initially created in Boston in 1937, and later in New York City, Miami Beach's version of the Latin Quarter opened in 1940 under the direction of Lou Walters and his partner E.M. Loew, the brilliant theatrical tycoon and owner of the vast Loew's Theatres empire.
After the Latin Quarter, Walters moved his show to the Carillon, 1959's Hotel of the Year, where his elaborate productions were considered the best on the beach for several years.
