Laurel is a town located in Franklin County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 579.


Geography

Laurel is located at 39°30'3" North, 85°11'13" West (39.500936, -85.186895)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 km˛ (0.2 mi˛). 0.6 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 579 people, 201 households, and 155 families residing in the town. The population density is 931.5/km˛ (2,434.6/mi˛). There are 220 housing units at an average density of 353.9/km˛ (925.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 98.96% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 201 households out of which 41.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% are married couples living together, 13.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.4% are non-families. 17.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.88 and the average family size is 3.21.


In the town the population is spread out with 31.4% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 104.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.5 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $29,375, and the median income for a family is $33,625. Males have a median income of $28,846 versus $20,625 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,035. 13.6% of the population and 11.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.5% of those under the age of 18 and 22.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Haspin Acres is located about halfway between Indianapolis, Indiana and Cincinnati, Ohio, just a little north of Highway 52 in Laurel.
If you want to stay in motel, there are plenty to choose from in Connersville, Indiana, which is nine miles north on Highway 121.
To get there from Indianapolis, take I-74 east for 23 miles, take Indiana 244 east to Andersonville for 21 miles, Take U.S. 52 east for seven miles, take Indiana 121 north to Laurel, about four miles.

The Laurel Steam Stone Company was organized in 1900, at that time there was an active quarry 3 miles west of Laurel with a railroad spur over which it was shipping up to 15 car loads of dressed stone a day.
Laurel Stone is an unusually high quality limestone occurring naturally in layers of ideal thickness, and easily separated and worked.
Laurel grew to an active little town, by the 1930’s it had 6 grocery stores, one drug store, a hotel, a café, a restaurant, a bakery, a garage and full-service gas station, and several other filling stations Most (outside of farming) eventually sought employment in the factories of Connersville.
