After having studied abroad, and made at least one travel to Rome, Italy, he was appointed deacon of Strängnäs in 1509. On meeting with Olaus Petri, he took influence of Lutheranism, and was promoted to archdeacon of Uppsala in the 1520's. In 1540, he was together with Olaus Petri sentenced to death. Opinions differ about the reason for this, and if there was a justification in the sentences. All agree, however, that the sentences were highly influenced by the King's personal opinions and disagreement with the men. The sentences were however, after much pleaing, turned into high fines instead, whereafter both men were set free.


He was said to have been one of the most knowledgable men of his time.
