Lauro Fred Cavazos (born January 4, 1927) is a U.S. educator. In 1988, he was appointed Secretary of Education by President Ronald Reagan, becoming the nation's first Hispanic Cabinet member. He served as Education Secretary from 1988 to 1990, continuing for a year into President George H. W. Bush's term. From 1980 to 1988, he served as President of Texas Tech University, and was the first alumnus to hold the post. In addition, he was also the University's first Hispanic president. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Texas Tech in 1949 and 1951, respectively. In 1954, he earned a Ph.D. from Iowa State University.
