He is leader of the Alberta Social Credit Party, which governed Alberta from 1935 to 1971, but is now a fringe party that holds no seats in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. He assumed the party's leadership in February 2001, and led the party the November 2004 provincial election. Lavern first became involved with Social Credit in the 1970s, and has run for the party in his home riding of Rocky Mountain House, the riding formerly represented by the longest-serving Socred Member of the Legislative Assembly, Alf Hooke, for 36 years from 1935 to 1971. In the last two provincial elections he has polled well in this riding, tying for second place in the 2004 polls. Lavern Ahlstrom was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and moved to Alberta at the age of seven.
Lavern, his wife, and three children were bestowed the prestigious "Rocky and District Farm Family Award." Lavern was awarded a life membership to the Rocky Mountain House Agricultural Society and served as Chairman of the Agricultural Service Board.
Lavern is committed to rebuilding the party to where it can once again provide Albertans with the type of government they enjoyed for 36 years under the previous Social Credit era.

Ahlstrom suggested there could be an increase in provincial taxes to pay for increased public spending on such things as health care and education, but that user fees would be abolished if his party took power.
Contrary to what their name might suggest, Ahlstrom and Shipka both said the Alberta Social Credit Party is not a socialist group and they are not interested in global involvement in the private sector.
Both Ahlstrom and Shipka admitted a government takeover by the Social Credits this November is unlikely — they currently have only 20 confirmed candidates running — but they said they hope to have a stronghold by the next election.
