Encyclopedia > Lawndale High

Lawndale High was a fictional location that featured regularly in MTV's animated series Daria. The high school was the learning/teaching place for most of the show's primary characters, and the setting of many stories. Not much information was ever given on the series about the history or educational program of the school, but it is certain that the subjects English, History, Art and Science were taught there, as well as a special Self Esteem class for sufferers of a lack thereof. Daria is an animated television show created by Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis Lynn and was a spin-off of Beavis and Butt-head. ...

Angeli Li

Principal Angeli Li was head educator at Lawndale High during the show's lifespan. It was a running gag in the series that as the principal, her first priority was increasing the school's funding, whether by sponsorships, fund-raising or general good publicity. This would often result in the exploitation of the students or the school as a institute of education. Rarely would she express any concern for the students' or teachers' well being, save for when she felt that it would reflect well on the school, and consequently on her.

Anthony DeMartino

Mr. Anthony DeMartino was Lawndale High's teacher of History, but by the time the show had started, he had clearly become very disillusioned with his role as an educator. His trademark was the habit he had of shouting every 4th or 5th word that he spoke, whereupon his right eye would bulge dangerously. Mr. DeMartino's perpetual state of rage was one of the many examples of extreme character humor the show had to offer, and he was also a fan favourite.

Timothy O'Neill

Mr. Timothy O'Neill taught English and Self Esteem class at Lawndale High, and was in many respects the polar opposite of Mr. DeMartino (see above). Mr. O'Neill was ludicrously sensitive, very in touch with his emotions but incapable of controlling them. His English assignments were often ill-disguised attempts to get his students to express personal pain or experiences, and he himself would often cry in class. Fairly early on in the series, he began a romantic relationship with colleague Janet Barch (see below).

Janet Barch

Ms. Janet Barch was a Science teacher at Lawndale High, but too often her teachings would be corrupted by her deep harboured resentment of all men, sparked by her divorce from her husband of twenty-two years. Almost everything she said on the show would inevitably digress into ravings about her husband, or about men in general. Her passionate relationship with colleague Timothy O'Neill (see above) was based initially on the attraction of a man with sensitivity, a concept she found paradoxical. In said relationship, she was exremely domineering and assertive, but the situation seemed to work well for both parties.

Claire Defoe

Ms. Claire Defoe was Lawndale High's resident Art teacher, and was characteristically very airy and vague, more in tune to art that anything else. She did not appear in the series nearly as frequently as the other teachers, and so very little was learned about her. She was never seen actually creating any art of her own, but she did delight in nurturing the talents of others, particularly student Jane Lane, a character famous on the show for her artistic nature and passion. Jane Lane is a character on the MTV cartoon show Daria. ...
