A major renovation project of LHS was begun in June 2004. These renovations include a new cafeteria, new state-of-the-art music facilities, several new science labs & classrooms, and a new media center. The addition to LHS is scheduled to be completed in 2007. Despite this fact, Lawrence has been overcrowded as of late. During a transition between periods, the halls of the school are often packed to the point of students having to force their way through the crowds in order to make class on time. A recent addition to the school with a whole new wing and a cafeteria due to open late 2006, as well as trailers placed temporarily outside the building, has barely eased the population.

The "Red Scare" was established in September 2001 by Mr. Todd Lerfondler. They have been increasingly popular among marching band audiences and have numerous musicians in their band who have performed at the regional and State Level. The band makes use of non-traditional instruments such as garbage cans in their routines. Red Scare's main goal is to entertain and sometimes even involve the audience in each and every show. In addition, the band's field show is different every week. The program's main focus is to let the students govern most major decisions in setting the band's direction. In 2005, an intense racial riot was sparked between two ethnic groups within the school, Polish and African Americans, in which the police were involved. Recently, African American students marched out of school and protested what they felt was unfair treatment by the administration, based on how teachers treat them because of how they act and dress in school. This incident was sparked during a lunch period, where an African American student threw a partially full bottle of water at a Caucasian student's head; the Caucasian student and a friend responded by "jumping" the African American student. The protest was fueled by the African American student's father contacting a local tabloid, complaining of how his son received a few days of suspension for pushing a guard; while, not mentioned in the article, the Caucasian students received a far longer period of suspension.
