Leczna, the gmina, has a population of about 24700, 21400 living in the town of Leczna, and some 3300 in the villages and countryside around it.
Leczna has been in existence since the 12th century, but only became a town in 1467 when permission was granted by the king for a town to be built.
These days, Leczna is in two halves: the older part which is in a state of general decay, and the newer half of blocks of flats built in the 70's for the miners.
