The institute was founded in 1969 by Strasberg, teacher and artistic director at the famed Actors Studio. With a reputation for being very rigorous and holding high standards for its students, the Strasberg Institute is one of the most prestigious acting schools in the world. It also has a special program with the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, where students can study in an 8 credit program. In 1969, he began the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in the same city.
He was married to his second wife, the actress and drama coach Paula Strasberg from 1934 until her death from cancer in 1966, and they were the parents of the now-deceased actress Susan Strasberg, and John Strasberg.
Lee Strasberg eventually remarried, this time to his third wife, the former Anna Mizrahi, a Sephardic Jew who was born in Venezuela, and the mother of his 2 youngest children.

Strasberg, Lee (1901-1982), American director and actor, and the leading teacher of the acting technique known as “the Method.” He was born in Budzanow, Austria-Hungary (now Budanov, Ukraine), went to the United States in 1909, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1936.
Strasberg began his professional career in 1924 as a stage manager and actor.
In 1951 Strasberg became artistic director of the Actors Studio, and in 1969 he founded the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.
