Lee Wallard was a Formula One driver (Indy 500 only) from the United States. He participated in 2 grands prix, debuting on May 30, 1950. He won 1 race, achieved 1 podium, and scored a total of 9 championship points.
Although running the popular Offenhauser 4 cylinder normally aspirated engine, Wallards car conceded almost 30 inches in engine displacement to the other normally aspirated cars.
Two weeks later Wallard was seriously injured in a sprint car crash and suffered severe burns.
He attempted a comeback, but the scarring from the burns left him unable to perspire and forced his retirement.
Although the boat was not needed, the race was significant to the track's history.
LeeWallard of Altamont, who went on to win the 1951 Indianapolis 500, won the 20 lap main event.
