It is the capital city of Iloilo and the regional center of the Western Visayas region.
Iloilo City also serves as a tourist's gateway to Boracay Island in Aklan, and to the island province of Guimaras, home of the Trappist Monks and sweet mangoes.
Historically, Iloilo first appears in the Maragtas Legend of the ten Bornean datus who came to the island of Panay around the 11th or 12th century and bartered gold for the plains and valleys of the island from a local Ati chieftain.
