Lemon Cove is a census-designated place located in Tulare County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 298.


Geography

Lemon Cove is located at 36°22'53" North, 119°1'33" West (36.381425, -119.025917)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.2 km˛ (0.8 mi˛). 2.2 km˛ (0.8 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 298 people, 121 households, and 76 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 137.0/km˛ (355.5/mi˛). There are 145 housing units at an average density of 66.6/km˛ (173.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 87.25% White, 0.67% African American, 4.70% Native American, 2.01% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 4.70% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 12.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 121 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.1% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% are non-families. 34.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.18.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 101.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.2 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $28,333, and the median income for a family is $36,607. Males have a median income of $20,938 versus $30,625 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $16,200. 32.6% of the population and 21.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 54.2% of those under the age of 18 and 16.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Lemon Cove, nestled in the foothills between Woodlake and Three Rivers, was first called Lime Kiln due to the lime deposits discovered in the vicinity in 1859.
The Pogues came to California in 1857 and settled near Venice Hill (between Woodlake and Lemon Cove) in Tulare County in 1862.
He was solely responsible for the introduction of lemons to Tulare County and the development of the townsite of Lemon Cove.
