Lenox Library is one of the cornerstones of the New York Public Library. The Lenox Library was founded by James Lenox in 1871 and later transformed along with J. J. The rotting beams supporting the cupola were among the surprises the library encountered after it started renovations in 2002 of an interior plagued by weeping walls, peeling ceilings, and pigeon guano 4 feet deep in the attic.
Lenox, home to Tanglewood, is a community of 6,000 whose summer population nearly doubles, and vacationers are among the library's 50,000 annual patrons.
Adding to the library controversy was word that the board had sold $213,010 worth of materials from its collection, including two letters from Abraham Lincoln and one from Thomas Jefferson.
Its status as one of the world's leading libraries is confirmed by its possession of (for instance) a Gutenberg Bible and a Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica.
The library consolidated with The New York Free Circulating Library in February, 1901, and Andrew Carnegie donated $5.2 million to construct branch libraries, with the proviso that the City of New York fund their maintenance and operations.
The main Research Library (now known as the Humanities and Social Science Library) was built on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan between 40th and 42nd Streets on the former site of the Croton Resevoir, and was dedicated on May 23, 1911, opening the next day.
