Leon is a town located in Waushara County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,281.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.0 km˛ (36.3 mi˛). 93.2 km˛ (36.0 mi˛) of it is land and 0.8 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.85% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,281 people, 539 households, and 384 families residing in the town. The population density is 13.7/km˛ (35.6/mi˛). There are 851 housing units at an average density of 9.1/km˛ (23.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 98.83% White, 0.00% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 539 households out of which 23.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.7% are married couples living together, 3.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 23.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.81.


In the town the population is spread out with 20.8% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 32.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 103.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.2 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $39,524, and the median income for a family is $45,938. Males have a median income of $30,924 versus $21,607 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,445. 7.7% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.9% of those under the age of 18 and 8.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Waushara County was established by an act of the Wisconsin Legislature on February 15, 1851.
The county seat was first located at Sacramento and was relocated to Wautoma in 1854 after a bitter fight between proponents of the two places.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 6.00% from 18 to 24, 24.90% from 25 to 44, 26.30% from 45 to 64, and 19.20% who were 65 years of age or older.
