Synopsis

Continuing seventeen years after Arcand's 1986 film Le Déclin de l'empire américain, the movie is once again much more conversation- and script-driven than by the typical elements of plot. What plot there is revolves around the character Rémy's battle with terminal cancer, and his estranged son's efforts, after reluctantly returning from London at the request of Remy's ex-wife Louise, to make his dying father more comfortable in his last days. He proves willing to go to any lengths to achieve this, and in the process he gathers the various other friends and family members from Remy's past who come to visit and comfort him. It also exposes the many faults of a government run health care system. His son is forced to bribe hospital and union officials to get his father transferred to a better room on a floor that is empty due to government directives. The hospital lacks the equipment his father needs to survive, but his father will not transfer to an American hospital. Like many Canadians, he says that he voted for socialized health care and is prepared to suffer the consequences. Montreal Mirror - Film : Les Invasions Barbares (373 words)
Les Invasions barbares, Denys Arcand's sequel to his 1986 Oscar-nominated Le Déclin de l'empire américain is easily the most anticipated Québécois film of the year.
Containing the same raucous humour of Le Déclin, Les Invasions contains an unforeseen level of reflection and social critique, and constructs a penetrating group portrait of the generation that transformed Quebec in the '60s and '70s.
And here we witness one of the 'barbarian invasions': lacking all the cultural and political aspirations of their parents, the younger generation is represented by puritanical-capitalist Sébastien, and Nathalie (Marie-Josée Croze), a heroin-addicted daughter of one of the boomers.
