Lesra Martin, whose triumph over poverty, illiteracy and injustice was chronicled in the Oscar-nominated 1999 film "The Hurricane," urged an audience at Bridgewater State College to embrace the power of the individual to change a destiny.
Martin was a functionally illiterate teenager in Brooklyn's Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood when he befriended a group of Canadians who took him to Toronto, with his parents' approval, and provided for his education.
Martin closed by inviting audience members to embrace three promises: that they would not be deterred by difficulty, that they would understand there is nothing they can't accomplish if they believe, and that they would be ready to act when opportunity knocks.
