Lester Horton was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Choosing to work in California (three thousand miles away from the center of modern dance - New York City), Horton developed his own approach that incorporated diverse elements including Native American dances and modern Jazz. Horton's dance technique (Lester Horton Technique) emphasises a whole body approach including flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness to allow freedom of expression. Horton trained a number of the mid-twentieth century's best-known modern dancers, including Alvin Ailey, Carmen de Lavallade, and Bella Lewitzky, as well as dance teacher James Truitte, Broadway dancer James Mitchell, and the gay activist Harry Hay. I find three major lapses in the above account: First, the fact that William Bowne was a major player/factor in the Horton evolution between 1932 and 1950. Second, the fact that Bella Lewitzky's oeuvre was/is an appendage of her work with Horton through that period. Three, that Horton pioneered, at least dancewise and theaterwise, an absolute intercultural and interracial raison-d'etre. Frank Eng P.S.: Harry Hay's claims are those of a likely one-night, two?, stand. P.P.S.: The Horton saga is not yet over. In the Lester Horton Dance Theater, Inc. foundation, and I freely profess partisan interest, albeit ex-officio, there remains and exists a direct, living link to the original in Don Martin, whose work teaching authentic "Horton Technique" at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts gives the demonstrable lie to Gotham second- and third-hand pretenders. Furtherrmore, in his "Odes & Homages," created at LACHSA for his students, Martin evinces the closest thing I have ever seen to the original. I LOVVVEEEE HORTONNNNNNNNNN:) WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
