Levon and the Hawks evolved from the backup band for Ronnie Hawkins. Created in the late 50s and early 60s, the band was comprised of Levon Helm, Jaime Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson. By 1963, Levon and the Hawks were doing the northeastern music circuit under their own name and as an independent band. They frequently played Toronto (Concord Tavern on Bloor St. and other venues) and Ontario and developed a small following locally as they toured. They had some recording success with "Stones That I Throw". In 1965 they were said to be heard by Mary Martin of Bob Dylan's management. Dylan was preparing to tour with his new music from Highway 61 Revisited and on meeting with Levon and the Hawks, the group embarked upon a world tour (though Levon Helm himself pulled out early in the tour)through North America, Australia, and Europe. The end of this tour found Levon and the Hawks settling in northern New York State. The band evolved into "The Band" in 1967 and in the house called 'Big Pink' created arguably one of the finest first recordings ever ("Music From Big Pink"). The rest is history. Some of the music recorded prior to 1966 can be heard on the recently released "The Band A Musical History".
