Bongoville is a town in south eastern Gabon, lying east of Franceville. It was known as Lewai until its renaming for President Omar Bongo, who was born in what was then a village but was greatly enlarged under his presidency. Senior Statistician Vasemaca Lewai said in the 1996 census, the population was 775,077 which was an increase from 715,375 in 1986.
Lewai said birth rate in past years had dropped significantly and this could be because of the increase in family planning.
