Liberty County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 61,610. The county's county seat is Hinesville, Georgia6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,561 km˛ (603 mi˛). 1,344 km˛ (519 mi˛) of it is land and 216 km˛ (83 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 13.85% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 61,610 people, 19,383 households, and 15,138 families residing in the county. The population density is 46/km˛ (119/mi˛). There are 21,977 housing units at an average density of 16/km˛ (42/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 46.64% White, 42.84% Black or African American, 0.52% Native American, 1.76% Asian, 0.43% Pacific Islander, 4.43% from other races, and 3.37% from two or more races. 8.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 19,383 households out of which 50.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.60% are married couples living together, 14.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.90% are non-families. 16.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.93 and the average family size is 3.29.


In the county the population is spread out with 32.00% under the age of 18, 17.90% from 18 to 24, 33.90% from 25 to 44, 12.20% from 45 to 64, and 3.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 111.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 115.10 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $33,477, and the median income for a family is $35,031. Males have a median income of $25,305 versus $20,765 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,855. 15.00% of the population and 13.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.20% of those under the age of 18 and 19.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
