Access to facilities is generally restricted to those on Chamber business; yet research publications produced are available to the public. Its Gothic Revival building, attached to the rear of the Centre Block at Parliament Hill, was opened in 1876. In 1916 fire destroyed the Centre Block but miraculously spared the library. According to legend, a librarian detected the fire and closed the great doors between the Library and the Centre Block. The Library was repaired after the 1952 fire, but the restoration was primarily structural. The Centre, East, and West Blocks received extensive climate control and electrical upgrades, but the Library was largely overlooked. In 2000, a 2-year conservation and restoration plan began. As of 2006, the restoration currently has no projected end date. The Library of Parliament was opened in 1876, and the original Centre Block completed in 1878.
The Centre Block burned in 1916; the edifice was entirely destroyed except for the Library of Parliament, whose treasures were preserved by a quick-thinking librarian who was able to close its massive doors.
